Restoring Ecosystems: A Successful Hike at Mt. Longonot

On Saturday, November 9th, 2024, the Slow Food Youth Network Kenya team organized a remarkable event that combined the love for nature with a dedication to environmental restoration – a hike at Mt. Longonot. The primary aim of this endeavor was to contribute to the restoration of the ecosystem surrounding this iconic volcanic mountain located in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya.

As the sun rose over the stunning landscape, a team of enthusiastic hikers gathered, ready to embark on an 18km trek around Mt. Longonot. This wasn’t just an ordinary hike; it was a journey with a purpose. The group set out with a mission to make a tangible impact on the environment through tree planting and seed distribution.

One of the highlights of the event was the successful planting of 100 tree seedlings. These seedlings were carefully chosen to support the local ecosystem, ensuring that native species would continue to thrive. But the efforts didn’t stop there. The team also distributed over 100,000 seedballs of indigenous species. Seedballs are a revolutionary method of reforestation, where seeds encased in a protective layer of charcoal dust are scattered across the land. This technique allows seeds to germinate and grow even in harsh conditions, making it an effective tool for large-scale reforestation efforts.

In addition to these activities, the hikers donated 400 more tree seedlings to the park for future restoration projects. This gesture underscores the ongoing commitment to restoring and preserving the natural beauty and biodiversity of Mt. Longonot.

However, the environmental impact didn’t end with tree planting. Recognizing the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment, the team also provided trash bags and gloves to help keep the park clean. This initiative not only aimed at restoring the ecosystem but also at fostering a sense of responsibility and care for the natural surroundings among all visitors.

The success of this event was a testament to the power of community action. It was heartwarming to see so many individuals come together with a shared goal of making a positive difference. The collective efforts of everyone who joined and supported the hike have left a lasting mark on Mt. Longonot and its ecosystem.

As we reflect on the day’s achievements, we are reminded of the profound impact that dedicated and coordinated actions can have on our environment. This hike was more than just a physical journey; it was a step towards a more sustainable and resilient ecosystem. The Slow Food Youth Network Kenya team extends a huge thank you to all the participants and supporters who made this possible. Together, we are making a difference, one step and one seed at a time.
