Nurturing Sustainable Futures: The Agro ecology Learning Pot in Makongo.

In Makongo Village of Kiptagwany Gilgil Subcounty Nakuru County, a transformative event unfolded, marking a significant stride towards sustainable agriculture. Slow Food Kenya, in collaboration with Sylvia’s Basket, Route to Food,Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, and the Nakuru County government, organized an Agroecology Learning Pot.

The Learning Pot was designed to empower food producers and consumers alike. It served as a platform to articulate and advocate for the pressing issues that ripple through our Agri-food systems, from the very inception of a seed in the soil to the final destination on a consumer’s plate. This ‘farm to fork’ approach, viewed through an agroecological lens, emphasizes the importance of understanding and respecting the intricate web of natural processes that sustain our food systems.

Agroecology is not merely a practice but a philosophy that intertwines the threads of ecological balance, economic viability, and social equity. It champions the idea that our food systems should work in harmony with nature, rather than against it. The Learning Pot event highlighted this ethos, showcasing how agroecological practices could lead to more resilient food systems that can withstand the challenges of climate change and social upheaval.

The event featured a series of discussions led by experts and community leaders. Participants delved into topics such as sustainable farming techniques, soil health, water conservation, and the importance of biodiversity. They also explored the economic aspects, discussing how agroecology can contribute to local economies and provide stable livelihoods for farmers and their families.
