Celebrating World Pulses Day: Breaking Myths & Embracing Nutrient-Rich Superfoods

Every year, World Pulses Day reminds us of the incredible benefits of pulses—small but mighty seeds that nourish both our bodies and the planet. Despite their nutritional value, pulses often face an unfair reputation. Some view them as “poor people’s food,” while others overlook them in favor of more processed protein sources. But why does this perception exist, and how can we change it?

Pulses: The Underrated Superfood

Pulses, which include beans, lentils, chickpeas, and peas, are among the most sustainable and nutrient-dense foods available. They naturally enrich soil with nitrogen, making them an eco-friendly choice for farmers. Their resilience in arid climates makes them a key crop for food security, especially in regions prone to drought. Plus, their long shelf life helps reduce food waste and ensures a reliable food source year-round.

Yet, despite these advantages, pulses often go unappreciated. Some cultures associate them with hardship, as they have historically been staple foods during times of economic struggle. However, this perception overlooks the fact that pulses are powerhouses of nutrition, offering high-quality protein, fiber, iron, and essential minerals at an affordable price.

A Celebration of Flavors: SF Cooks’ Alliance Kenya Takes the Lead

To honor World Pulses Day, SF Cooks’ Alliance Kenya curated a vibrant culinary experience, proving that pulses can be both delicious and versatile. The team prepared four exquisite cold salads, each showcasing a unique blend of flavors:

1.  Butter Bean Salad
2. Chickpea Salad
3. Dolicos Bean Salad
4. Three-Bean Fusion – a delightful mix of butter beans, chickpeas, and dolicos beans, enhanced with ripe mango and creamy avocado.

Each salad was carefully crafted with a medley of fresh vegetables—tomatoes, white onions, cucumbers, celery, and colorful bell peppers—then seasoned to perfection with white pepper, olive oil, vinegar, honey, salt, and a splash of lime juice.

A Traditional Delight: The Magic of Muthura

The celebration didn’t end there! The team also prepared Muthura, a cherished Meru dish made from white sorghum, pigeon peas, and potatoes, all boiled and mashed together into a comforting, hearty meal. Served with a side dish of choice, this humble yet nutritious delicacy showcases the richness of traditional pulse-based recipes.

Reimagining Pulses for the Future

Pulses are not just survival food—they are the future of sustainable eating. Whether enjoyed in salads, stews, or innovative fusion dishes, they offer a delicious, affordable, and environmentally friendly way to nourish our bodies.

As we continue to celebrate World Pulses day, let’s challenge outdated perceptions and embrace pulses for what they truly are: nutritional goldmines that deserve a place on every plate. Look around, ask about different varieties, experiment with recipes, and discover the magic of pulses for yourself!
