Farmers in Baringo call for more sensitization on Agro-ecology

Farmers in Baringo County are emphasizing the need for greater awareness about agro-ecology farming. During a Community Food Dialogue/Baraza held in Loboi-Marigat, Baringo County on July 25, 2023, the farmers—many of whom are also opinion leaders—highlighted knowledge gaps as a significant challenge affecting both food security and food safety.

The purpose of these community food dialogues is to drive advocacy at the grassroots level. By mobilizing, raising awareness, and empowering communities, the dialogues aim to encourage pro-people policies. Communities play a central role in advocating for their rights, promoting agroecology, ensuring food safety, and supporting a healthy food system. This involves engaging local opinion leaders, influencing decision-makers, and collaborating with stakeholders.

Sammy Chepkuto, Chairman of the Kishochon Presidia, emphasized that local farmers possess considerable potential. However, they require access to accurate information on agro-ecology. These forums provide a platform for farmers to gain essential knowledge and make informed decisions.

Sub-county Agriculture Officer John Omollo echoed these sentiments, affirming that the Baringo County Government will continue partnering with like-minded organizations such as Slow Food Kenya to empower farmers. The meeting also featured Area Chief Denis Rotich, who encouraged farmers to apply the insights gained from these forums to enhance their agricultural practices.

It’s worth noting that Slow Food Kenya consistently conducts a series of community food dialogues in other Counties in Kenya, aiming to promote advocacy for pro-people policies. Their belief is that effective advocacy begins at the community level.
