Food Biodiversity and Agroecology
Slow Food Kenya works with communities, schools, and farmers to conserve local biodiversity and promote agroecology. Through community and school gardens, farmer-managed seed systems, and the recovery of indigenous crops and livestock, we strengthen food sovereignty.
- Slow Food Gardens: Slow Food Kenya aims to create 1,000 good, clean, and fair food gardens in African schools and villages to ensure communities have access to fresh and healthy food while promoting agroecological learning. Over 500 gardens are already established, reaching more than 12,500 students and community members who actively engage in sustainable food production.
- Ark of Taste: Slow Food Kenya aims to identify and catalogue traditional quality foods and flavours that are at risk of disappearing through the Ark of Taste initiative. The organization works with communities to rediscover, protect, and promote their rich agricultural, gastronomic, and cultural heritage with pride and dignity.
- Presidia: Through the Presidia project, Slow Food Kenya aims to safeguard artisanal foods, native breeds, plant varieties, and traditional farming and fishing techniques that are facing extinction. By working closely with local producers, the organization strengthens ecosystems and rural landscapes, ensuring that time-honoured knowledge and biodiversity are preserved for future generations.while improving nutrition, resilience, and livelihoods.
